Chapter 7
The Rendezvous
The Rendezvous
Many say that sin city is in Nevada. Time has forgotten where the true sins were committed. In a small thriving town set 200 feet below sea level in Southern California, lies a resort for the wealthy on the coast of the Salton Sea, Bombay Beach. The year is 1950, just five years after the victorious and lucrative World War II. Families and investors who supported the war went from mediocre rich to eye-blinding wealthy through manufacturing guns, bullets, machinery, medical supplies, and vehicles!
Bombay Beach is a beautiful small town on the shore of a desert lake not far from Palm Springs. Summer temperatures are hellishly hot in the 120s-130s and generally remains hot throughout the year. The Navy still uses this area to test their B-29 Bombers along the Southwest shore. The rest of the Salton Sea is filled by yachts, boats, skiers, and lots of fish. The sands are white-gray, the waters blue. There's not a cloud in the sky. It is so clear one can almost see the stars in the daytime. While driving through town one will notice an abundance of Rich Cars: MGs, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis, Triumphs, Allards, and some more affordable Plymouths, Oldsmobiles, Lincolns, and Fords. The wealthy love their money with their extravagant cars and fancy RVs. Many have servants to pour their martinis at the lakeside, while enjoying the scenery and smoking Cuban cigars. The town thrives in the summer with an additional 10,000 people adding to the economy and pollution.
Paul Gibbons runs the ski shop and charges a premium for those wealthy folks coming into town. He also sells a lot of water skis to the showgirls performing three and five girl pyramids on water skis, ballet skiing, synchronized skiing, etc.
One of those showgirls fell in the water during her performance losing her skis. She was tumbling all around, holding onto the rope with just one hand, put herself in a cannonball and started spinning in circles! Then she stopped spinning and figures out how to stand up on the water without any skis! To top it off, she lines back up with the other synchronized girls performing her ballet stunts barefoot! Pretty soon everybody wants to try skiing on the water without skis! Paul often wonders how his ski shop will survive if water skiers won't use the skis he sells? He doesnât like to talk about the new trend because it could hurt his business.
As he goes about his daily business polishing skis, increasing their attractiveness to would-be customers, one customer catches his eye. He has a pin-up of her in the back of the store. Actors and fans fall head over heels for her, Betty Page. She has dark brown wavy hair falling over her perfect shoulders, perfectly groomed eyebrows hovering above her seductive, ferocious eyes. She has a beauty mark on her left cheek and is wearing a gown fit for going to the Oscars. Her eyes show fearlessness and perfection. Her beauty makes any man quiver, maybe even women.
